This campaign saw the Club celebrate their centenary season, having been formed in 1904, with Andy Black sill in charge of team affairs. The summer saw the arrivals of new faces Dean Ranger (Melksham Town) and Tom Knighton (Cadbury Heath) as well as the return of familiar faces Brad Peters (Bridgwater Town) and Lee Ashton. The season started well with a 5-0 home win over Barnstaple Town and on that opening day of the season nobody expected the Club to have as good a year as they did. The FA Cup trail started with a replay win against Bishop sutton and then a brilliant 3-2 win at Southern League side Taunton Town. It took another replay to beat Backwell United and then the Robins held Salisbury City to a 1-1 draw but were defeated 3-0 in a midweek Badgers Hill replay in front of 665 supporters. The league campaign continued to be successful as well as they team started to challenge Bideford for the title and the squad was boosted with the signing of former Bristol Rovers defender Jon Crowley from Brislington. A memorable Somerset Premier Cup clash at Conference South side Weston-super-Mare saw the Robins defeated 6-4 after extra-time. Thoughts turned to the FA Vase and after home wins over both Hallen and Dawlish Town the team headed to London to face Kingsbury Town with new goalkeeper Paul Thompson between the sticks following Ray Johnston's release from the Club. A tight game saw a 2-1 win which set-up a long journey to Liverpool to play Skelmersdale United. With a huge contingent of travelling supporters who sang their hearts out for 90 minutes the Robins produced one of their best every performances to win 2-0 with both goals coming from Mark Salter. Another addition to the squad was made with another former Bristol Rovers player joining the ranks as Shane Hobbs moved from Mangotsfield United for a fee of £500. League results continued to be positive but the whole Club was now geared up for an assault on the Vase as the town hosted Brook House and in front of a crowd of 732 the Robins raced into a 3-0 lead to move into the Quarter-Finals and another long trip. This time up to Jarrow Roofing in the North East. The initial game was postponed through a snow bound pitch and in the build-up to the rescheduled game the team crashed out of the Les Phillips Cup at the hands of Calne Town (1-2). With the Vase game postponed Club Officials were invited to Tottenham Hotspurs White Hart Lane to view the Semi-Final draw along with the other Clubs involved. However, this was the only involvement in the semis. When the squad finally made it to Jarrow the squad was depleted through injury and suspension and the dream ended with a 3-0 loss. Prior to the game the club had arranged for the players to train on the morning of the big match at Sunderland's academy and then had a guided tour of the impressive Stadium of Light. The season then died away a dip in form in the league which saw the team slip behind Bideford and Corsham to finish the season in third place for the second consecutive season. All in all it was a great campaign and a fitting way for the Club to celebrate its centenary but little did everybody know what was in store for them just a few months later as joy & optimism turned to anger and humiliation.... |
