The season started with Paul Thorpe in charge for his second campaign at the helm and the summer saw the arrival of new signings James Billing (Bath City), Paul Henbest (Crawley Town), Simon Farrell (Warminster Town), Ged Want (Street), Jon Hayter (Salisbury City) and Sam Jarman (Yeovil Town). The league season didn't start well for the Robins with defeats against Odd Down (Bath), Bridgwater Town, Welton Rovers and Keynsham Town in the opening two months but the Club did complete the signing of striker Simon Gale from Bridport. The FA Cup saw a 1-0 win at home against Tuffley Rovers before beating Clevedon Town in a replay at The Hand Stadium. The teams finished level at 1-1 in the first game with Hayter scoring an equaliser while the replay went to extra-time with Frome winning 3-2. However, another visit to the same ground saw a heavy 4-1 defeat against Clevedon United. Mark Salter returned to the Club following his departure from Bath City where the Robins forked out a £1,000 transfer fee for his services but the team had already been knocked out of the Somerset Premier Cup going down 2-1 at Southern League side Team Bath. Two good 4-1 wins in the FA Vase against Dawlish Town and Paulton Rovers set up an away tie against BAT Sports but a poor performance saw a 3-2 defeat which proved to be Thorpe's last game in charge of the team before leaving by mutual consent. Former Mangotsfield United boss Andy Black was installed as the new Manager and in his first game in charge guided the side to a 1-0 win at Bridgwater Town. Black went about over-hauling his squad with the capture of striker Dean Griffiths and Jon McAlinden from Mangotsfield, Nick Robinson from Bishop Sutton, former England Schoolboys International 'keeper Ray Johnston and winger Steve Devlin from Chard Town. With the team struggling to put together any form at all at home the Club turned to a White Witch, Titania Hardie, who 'helped' transform the season and despite the sceptics the Robins went on an incredible run (after the changing rooms had been painted a different colour by Hardie). The Club received huge media coverage from all around the world and the team went on to finish third in the league, the highest league placing for a very long time. The run also saw an 8-0 home win over Dawlish Town and a 6-3 win in a local derby against Welton Rovers. Frome were well and truly on the up once again. |
